Dear Devotees and friends of Sri-Sri-Radha-Madana-Mohan!
Please accept our humble obeisance. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
Taking big steps we are once again approaching the most auspicious and sweetest month of the Vaishnava-calendar-year, the month of Kartika.
Let us look at the upcoming month:
On Purnima, Sunday 13th, the Kartika month starts. Kartika or Damodara month, as it is also known, is most liked by the devotees of the Lord since it is the month for prayers and deep absorption, the month of sweet bhajans, ghee-lamps, heart enchanting festivals and lots of opportunities for Vaishnava sanga.
In his Nectar of Devotion, Srila Prabhupada writes about Kartik: “The execution of devotional service during the month of Kartik (Oct-Nov) is especially recommended to be performed in Mathura. This system is still followed by many devotees. They go to Vrindavan or Mathura and stay there during the month of Kartik, specifically to perform devotional service.”
Srila Rupa Goswami extols the Damodara (Kartik) month in his Mathura Mahatyam: “To them who worship Krishna in Vrindavan, the Lord gives them their original spiritual forms. The perfect atonement for purifying the self from the sins of a lifetime is to worship Lord Damodara in Vrindavan during Kartik. The month of Kartik spent in Vrindavan brings forth the supreme destination.”
Kartika month is also called “Damodara month”, which refers to that naughty boy, Krishna, who Mother Yasoda bound around the waist with a rope. During this Damodara month, if one manages to capture Krishna with the ropes of pure devotion, he/she will be released from the bondage of repeated birth and death. (Mahanidhi Swami, Srila Prabhupada in Radha-Damodar, Chpt. 9, “Kartik at Radha-Damodar”)
For those not able to physically go to the holy dhama of Vrindavan there are at least three other options:
